Ich dropte meine erste Vertrampe im Alter von 11 Jahren. Sie stand in der alten „Funhall“, und es war ein einschneidendes Erlebnis für mich. Von diesem Moment an wusste ich, dass Halfpipe-fahren ein ganz wichtiger Teil meines Lebens werden würde. Es gab in den nächsten Jahren kaum eine Woche in der ich nicht ein, oder zweimal gefahren bin. Zwei Jahre später hörte ich das erstemal davon, dass der Besitzer des Grundstückes den Vertrag mit der Stadt nicht mehr verlängern würde und daher ein Käufer für die große blaue Vertramp gesucht wird. Ich setzte mich mit dem Betreiber der Funhall ( Wiki ) in Verbindung und bot an die Rampe zu kaufen. Ich war damals 14 Jahre alt, ich wurde ausgelacht und es wurde mir gesagt, dass ich niemals so viel Geld haben würde um die Rampe kaufen zu können. Schweren Herzens musste ich Abschied nehmen und zusehen wie unsere Grazer Halfpipe nach Kärnten verkauft wurde.

In den folgenden Jahren musste ich zum Skaten nach Wien oder Klagenfurt ausweichen, oder gleich zu Wettbewerben nach England, Italien oder Deutschland fahren. Dann habe ich versucht wieder eine Trainingsmöglichkeit für Graz zu bekommen, habe eine Unterschriftenaktion gestartet, mich mit allen Grazer Stadtpolitikern in Verbindung gesetzt und konnte nach fast 3 Jahren endlich einen Gemeinderatsbeschluss erwirken, wonach für die Vertskater in Graz eine ausreichende Summe zur Verfügung gestellt werde und ein Platz für eine moderne Skateboardanlage gesucht werden würde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt befand ich mich für ein Austauschjahr in Australien und musste dort hören, dass die gesamte, zur Verfügung stehende Summe für einen Betonpark für Streetskater verwendet werden würde. Wieder einmal kein Geld für eine Halfpipe. Nach fast 3 Jahren schienen meine Bemühungen endgültig gescheitert zu sein, bis mich ein Freund aus Kärnten informierte, dass die alte Grazer Vertramp, die bis dahin in Spital an der Drau gestanden war, plötzlich wieder zum Verkauf stand. Ich kratzte meine ganzen Ersparnisse zusammen und schickte meinen Vater damit nach Spital um die Rampe, für die in Graz kein Geld mehr vorhanden war, in Eigenregie zu kaufen. Wir haben sie dann zerlegt, nach Graz transportiert, dort zwischengelagert und sie vorigen Herbst bei der neuerrichteten Skateranlage „Grünanger“ wieder aufgebaut. Mein Vater nahm sich 2 Wochen frei und mit einigen Freunden zusammen haben wir die Halfpipe wieder aufgebaut. Die Rampe steht jetzt auf öffentlichem Grund und ist für jederman frei zugänglich. Nachträglich betrachtet war es für mich, als Schüler eine erhebliche finanzielle, und für alle Freiwilligen, die beim Wiederaufbau geholfen haben eine große körperliche Belastung. Bei allen die mitgeholfen haben, Graz wieder eine Vertramp zu geben möchte ich mich hier nochmals herzlichst bedanken.

I dropped my first vertramp when I was 11. It was located in the “FUNhall” and that was an important moment for me. I knew from this moment that riding vert will be an important part of my life. There was not a week I did not skate once or twice the following years. Two years later I got to know the lease for the park had run out and the vertramp was for sale. I got into contact with the owner and offered to buy the ramp. I was laughed at, being 14 years of age at that time. They said I´d never come up with the money and I had to witness as our ramp was sold to Kärnten.

The following years I had to travel to Vienna or Klagenfurt or to contests in Germany, England or

Italy

to ride vert.

Then I tried to get vert back to Graz.

I collected signatures, talked to politicians and after 3 years I succeeded. The vertskaters of Graz would get a good amount of money and a spot for a new ramp would be found.

I was in Australia for a year then and had to hear that the amount would be used for a concrete streetpark instead. Bummer.

Then a friend called me and reported that our old ramp was sold again. I scratched together my savings and sent out my dad to buy the ramp on my own.

We dismantled it, moved it and resurrected it with the help of many friends. The ramp is now public and may be used by everyone.

In the end this was a large effort by all who helped and I want to thank everyone for their dedication.

Wunderle

Skateboarder sind Reisende, die nur aus dem Grunde einer Session viele hundert, manchmal tausende Kilometer zurücklegen, so war das schon immer, so wird das immer sein. Ralf Wunderle hatte von Freiburg zu unserer Backyard Ramp in Ettlingen nur 130 KM zurückzulegen. Trotzdem waren das einige super Tage, damals im Jahr 1983. Frontside Air.

Skateboarders are travellers who travel hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles just for a session. It was always like that and will be like that. Ralf Wunderle just had to travel 130 KM from Freiburg to our backyard ramp in Ettlingen in 1983. Those were great days. Frontside air.

Es war an einem trüben Wochentag 1982 mittags an unserer Rampe, die an einer Zufahrtsstraße nach Ettlingen in einem Schrebergarten stand. Ich war verletzt und zeigte einigen Anfängern die ersten Schritte auf einer Vertramp als eine dicke Benzlimousine anhielt und ein kleiner untersetzter, älterer Mann ausstieg und uns zuschaute. Er sprach mich an und sagte er baut gerade eine Rollerdisco in Hemsbach und braucht noch so eine Rampe als Attraktion, wo man so was bekomme.

Ich sagte ihm das ist selbst gebaut. Er meinte wo wir die Pläne herhatten. Ich erklärte ihm, dass es keine Pläne gab, ich ihm aber einen zeichnen könnte. Er gab mir seine Adresse und düste davon.

Die nächsten 5 Tage machte ich nichts anderes und zeichnete mit meinen bescheidenen Kenntnissen auf, was wir gebaut hatten, erklärte das Ganze nochmals in Worten und nannte ihm die Maße.

Ich steckte das Ganze in einen Umschlag, schickte es ab und hörte 3 Monate nichts mehr davon. Dann eines Mittags klingelte das Telefon und ein erboster Herr Benthin rief an. Er meinte er hätte den Plan seinem Schreiner gegeben, der hätte gebaut, ohne zu wissen, was er da baut. Nun könne keiner auf der Rampe skaten, irgend etwas müsse er falsch gemacht haben.

Wir sollen doch mal vorbei kommen, er zahlt das Zugticket.

Am folgenden Wochenende fuhren wir nach Hemsbach und standen bald vor der perfektesten Rampe die wir je gesehen hatten.

Es war wohl so, dass in Hemsbach niemand wusste wie man so etwas skated.

It was on a dull day 1982 at out ramp located next to a road leading to our hometown Ettlingen. I was hurt and teached some youngsters how to get their first kickturns when a Mercedes limousine stopped and an elderly man left the car and started to watch us. He started talking to us and told us he is opening a rollerdisco in Hemsbach and needs a ramp like this and where to get one.

I told him we had built it ourselves. He asked for the plans. I explained there are no plans but I may be able to draw a plan. He gave his address and left.

I did not do much else the next 5 days and drew a plan with my small drawing skills. I wrote the process of ramp building in words too and stated the measurements.

I put it in an envelope and sent it his way. I did not hear anything for 3 months straight.

Then one day angry Mr. Benthin called. He had given the plan to his carpenter who had built a ramp not knowing what he was building. No one was able to ride it so there must be something wrong with it.

He told us he would pay for the train ticket and invited us for the next weekend.

We made the trip and soon stood in front of the most perfect ramp we had ever seen.

It was just the case that no one knew how to ride something like that in Hemsbach.

Das Tropica war eine Rollerdisco mit einem Rollerrink in O-Form der um eine Kunsteisbahn aus Kunststoff gebaut war. 3 Wochen später wurden wir zur Eröffnung gerufen. Die Kunsteisbahn wurde mit einem Gleitmittel eingesprüht, das dann in der ganzen Halle rumflog. Ergebnis war, dass die Rampe glatter war als die Eisfläche selbst. Das Kunsteis funktionierte nie wie versprochen und die Fläche wurde bald zur Streetarea für die Skater umgebaut und geht als die wohl rutschigste Streetarea aller Zeiten in die Geschichte ein.

Ein Jahr später wurde eine zweite Ramp gebaut. Auf einer Seite wurde das Vert weggelassen, somit war das wohl die erste Miniramp in Deutschland. Wieder einige Jahre später wurde eine doppelt so große Vertramp auf Stelzen über die Rollschuhbahn gebaut.

Unzählige legendäre Sessions und Contests fanden im Tropica statt und viele Skater reisten von weit her an um die Wochenenden im Tropica zu verbringen. Wie immer brachte ein guter Park viele gute Skater hervor. Im Tropica wurden Mark Mitzka, Nico Heresch und Martin Hopp und viele andere groß.

Tropica was a rollerdisco with a rollerrink and a square of artificial icerink in the middle for ice skating. The opening was 3 weeks later. The ice rink was covered with a glide spray which distributed itself all over the place and made the ramp more slippery than the ice.

The ice rink never worked right and the place was soon turned into the most slippery street area ever known.

A second ramp was built a year later. The vert part was left off on one side making it Germany´s first miniramp. Some years later a vertramp double the size of the first one was built on a podium above the rollerrink.

Uncountable legendary sessions and contests took place there and skaters from all over travelled there to spend the weekend. Like always a good park produced many good skaters. Tropica was the breeding ground for Marc Mitzka, Nico Heresch and Martin Hopp.

A review

Gestern hielt ich die erste Ausgabe des Skateboarder´s Jounal in den Händen.

Ich hatte bereits die erste Ausgabe des Thrasher-, Transworld- und Monster Magazines in den Händen, alle von denen gibt es noch, ob das ein gutes Zeichen ist?

Ich denke schon.

Von einem wie Herausgeber Jack Smith , der ein Jahr bevor ich geboren wurde angefangen hat zu skaten, hat man ein Mag mit Herz und Seele erwartet.

Das Versprechen im Vorfeld war, alle Genres des Skateboarding gleichermaßen zu behandeln und dabei auch dessen Geschichte nicht zu vernachlässigen.

Ich muss sagen, Jack hat nicht zu viel versprochen. Mit der ersten Ausgabe legt er eine gewaltige Qualität an den Tag. Das Heft kommt gebunden und nicht geheftet, dickes Papier, Hochglanz, vierteljährlich. Es gibt wenig Werbung, man blättert nie mehr als vier Seiten ohne auf einen Artikel zu treffen.

Yesterday, I received the first issue of The Skateboarder´s Journal. I already held the first issues of Thrasher,- Transworld- and Monster Magazine in my hands. All of them are still running today, a good sign? I think yes.

From someone like editor Jack Smith who started to skateboard a year before I was born we expected a mag with heart and soul. The promise beforehand was to include all genres of skateboarding and not to forget the history side.

I must say Jack did not promise too much. The first issue shows an amazing quality. It comes bound and not stapled, thick paper, glossy, quarterly. There are few ads so you never turn more than 4 pages without hitting an article.

Alles in Allem ein großartiges Magazin das hoffentlich viele Anhänger findet. Es ist großartig zu lesen. Das Einzige was mir nicht so gefallen hat war, dass ich viele der Photos schon kannte. Das muss ja aber nicht jedem so gehen.

All in all a great magazine which will find many followers hopefully. Amazing to read. The only downside was that I already knew some of the photos. But that has not to be the case for everyone.

Wir wünschen dem SBJ viel Erfolg und freuen uns schon auf die nächste Ausgabe, leider erst in 3 Monaten.

We wish The SBJ a lot of success and are looking forward to the next issue. Too bad it is 3 months away.

Die 70er Jahre waren die große Zeit der Skateparks in den USA. Meist waren das kommerzielle Unternehmen, darauf ausgelegt, Profit zu machen. Da ein Unternehmen ein Logo braucht haben diese Parks sehr oft Erkennungslogos produziert, die bei den Skateboardern die Herzen höher schlagen ließen. Noch heute sind diese Logos in uns eingebrannt und sofort tauchen in unseren Gehirnen Photos und Videosequenzen der berühmten Parks auf. Die glücklichen, die diese Parks besuchen durften, werden dieses Erlebnis wohl nie vergessen und manch einer hütet die Mitbringsel wie Stickers und T-shirts und Photos wie kleine Heiligtümer einer vergangenen Ära. Viele der in diesen Parks designten Pools und Bowls sind heute in modernen Parks nachgebaut worden.

Leider haben kommerzielle Skateparks wohl keinen Bestand, so gibt es heute nur noch wenige moderne Logos. Manchmal, wenn ein Park privat oder aus einer engagierten Gemeinschaft stammt macht sich jemand die Mühe ein Logo zu designen.

Einige wenige Logos haben wir mal herausgesucht und auch einige interessante Fakten und

Links zusammengetragen.

The 70s was the time of the skateparks in the USA. They mostly were commercial enterprises made to raise profit. Because companies need logos the parks often created logos to get recognised which made skaters hearts jump just from seeing them. Still today these logos are etched into our brains and videosequences and photos pop up in our heads. Those lucky enough to have skated them keep memorabilia like stickers and t-shirts like the holy grail of an era long gone. Many of the pools and bowls have been reissued in modern parks. Sadly, commercial skateparks don´t seem to thrive anywhere, so there are not many logos today. Sometimes when a spot is created privately or in a community someone produces a logo.

We have sorted out some logos, old and new and have gathered some interesting facts and links.

Carlsbad Skatepark, California

Allgemein wird dieser Park als der erste kommerzielle Park überhaupt angesehen. Eröffnet am 13. März 1976 war dieser Park Vorreiter von vielen Tausend und war nur 3 Jahre geöffnet. Skateboarding und Skateparks entwickelten sich so rasant, dass die sanften Runs für die Skater schnell uninteressant wurden. Bemerkenswert daran ist, dass heute viele neue Parks wieder sanfter und runder gebaut werden und der Carlsbad Park wieder seine Daseinsberechtigung hätte. Mike McGill baute in den 80ern auf den Überresten einen neuen Holzrampenpark. Nachdem dieser nicht mehr existierte wurden die Runs eingegraben. Im Jahr 2005 versuchte man den Park als nationale landmark wieder auszugraben und zu erhalten. Leider wurde der Park inzwischen komplett entfernt.

Skateboarding and skateparks developed so fast that the mellow runs were soon boring for the skaters. Interesting enough some of todays parks are being built mellower and more round, so Carlsbad would have its right of existence again today. Mike McGill opened a park on the premisis consisting of wooden ramps. After this, the runs were buried under dirt. In 2005 people tried to get it known as a national landmark and excavate it. The park is torn down now. Sad.

Der Combipool wurde inzwischen im Vans Skatepark in Orange, CA nachgebaut und ist jedes Jahr die Arena für die ProTec Pool Party, dem wohl berühmtesten Poolcontest aller Zeiten.

1986 hatte ich das Glück den Combipool skaten zu können. Werde ich nie vergessen.

Ich habe noch diesen einen Sticker mit dem Logo.

Über den Park lief später eine Riesenwasserrutsche die dann Lecks bekam, was den Park wohl unskatebar machte. Der Name BigO bezog sich auf den wie ein riesen O geformten Hauptpool.

Unforgettable ist the report ofthe Hester Series Contest there. Steve Olson, frontside air to hangup over the channel, Duane Peters layback rollout. There was a waterslide going over the runs which sipped water onto the park later and made it unridable. The name BigO referred to the main pool which was formed like a giant O.

Gebaut 1978 blieb dieser Park als einer der letzen Parks aus den 70ern bis 1987 offen. Obwohl er nicht gut gebaut war wurde er zum Mekka der Vertskater aus aller Welt. Mit sehr viel Enthusiasmus konnte die DMSR über die Jahre gerettet werden, bis der Eigentümer das Land verkaufte und der Park weichen musste.

Built in 1978 this park remained open until 1987. It was not very wel built but was the Mekka of modern vert skating until it ended. DMSR was run with a lot of enthusiasm over the years until the owner sold the land and the park had to go.

Georg “Rampenrudi” Wanek hat seine Welttour beendet. 92.600 KM hat er zurückgelegt. Er gibt uns hier einen kurzen Abriss seiner Tour und einige Photos zum Bestaunen. Ich bin mir sicher, das ist nur ein kleiner Ausschnitt all dessen was er erlebt hat, aber nicht minder interessant.

Die Market Street in San Francisco. Als ich im Nov. 2010 erstmals nach SF kam, kam mir die Stadt seltsam vertraut und bekannt vor. Durch zahlreiche Skatevideos hatte ich bereits eine derart hohe Verbundenheit mit der Bay-Metropole so das ich mich fortan total wohl fühlte.

Market Street in San Francisco. Arriving there Nov 2010 it was strange how familiar the city looked. I was connected to it through watching countless skate videos so I felt comfortable there right away.

Dann allerdings mal eben die Golden Gate Bridge zu überqueren auf den Weg zur Skatesession ist wiederum ganz besonders!

However crossing Golden Gate Bridge on the way to a skate session was something special!

Einige Brücken sind überquert worden, viele Stunden hat mich der Greyhound Bus verlässlich über die Highways gelotst, unter anderem kam ich in Tucson, Arizona im Santa Rita Skatepark vorbei, wo der Channel des Pools besondere Attraktivität hatte.

I crossed a lot of bridges, traveled on Greyhound Buses and eventually reached Tucson, Arizona. The Santa Rita Skatepark has a pool with a great channel.

Nach den USA ging es nach Südafrika. Egal ob auf einem Trip oder im wahren Leben, wichtig ist immer das du ein Ziel vor Augen hast, sonst landest du irgendwo. Wie wenn du diesen Wegweiser nachgehst. :)

Craig_Craninmal: Oder im Shed, der neuen Halle. Dort habe ich Sessions mit den Locals, die ich schon von einem früheren Trip kenne. U.a. Traf ich Craig „Cranimal“ Baum wieder.

There is a lot of activity concerning vert skateboarding. On the Prahran Ramp or at The Shed, the new indoor park. I had sessions with locals I knew from previous trips. I remet Craig “Cranimal” Baum there among others

Neu war es für mich in Asien. Ganz besonders toll ist es in Singapore, eine richtig zukunftsorientierte City.

Asia was new to me. Singapore is especially great, a city dedicated to the future.

Viele Völker dort glauben das Springbrunnen Glück bringen, so wie hier wo sich eine Touristengruppe im leeren Springbrunnen aufhält.

Wir Skateboarder hingegen sind eher der Meinung dass leere Swimmingpools oder Concrete Parks Glück bringen. Bei so einer Strand Location wie in diesem Convic Skatepark keine Frage.

Ganz abgefahren war es in Indien, da erlebt man Überraschungen wie hier in Himachal als sich dieser Spinnerich in unserem Schlafzimmer einquartiert hatte. India was one of a kind. Surprise, surprise was this spiderman in my bedroom…

In Goa gab es schöne Strände. Doch für mich auf Dauer zu langweilig.

Etwas Arbeit macht die Sache schon spannender. Bei der Freiwilligenarbeit, hier Nachmittagsunterricht in einem Slum in Goa. Die Schüler wissen den Unterricht zu schätzen.

Vor der Tür fingen mich immer die Jungs aus der Nachbarschaft ab. Die freuten sich wenn sie jemanden zum Blödeln hatten.

Auch weit von zu Hause vergesse ich nicht wo ich herkomme: Going rot-weiß-rot in Hong-Kong :)

Die Ferne hat allerdings doch mehr zu bieten. Wie zum Beispiel den SMP Skatepark in Shanghai. Alles größer hier.

Fazit skatemäßig: Faszinierend dass es auf der ganzen Welt Vertszenen gibt und überall der Spirit von Sessions mit Freunden, pushen von Tricks und Lines sowie ein Zusammenhalt in der Szene da ist. Es ist für mich absolut Klasse ein Vertskater zu sein. Dass es das Reisen einfacher macht und du überall auf der Welt Gleichgesinnte triffst die dich so aufnehmen als würdest du schon seit Jahren dazu gehören sei hier nur am Rande erwähnt. Zu einer Kultur zu zählen in der du dich völlig frei ausleben kannst, wo es um Spaß, Vernunft, sinnvolle Lebensgestaltung geht, noch dazu etwas das jahrzehntelang Bestand hat und nur von einem kleinen, absolut vielfältigen Kreis Menschen ausgelebt wird, ist ein sehr besonderes Privileg.

Bottom line skatewise: It is fascinating to see that there is a vertszene worldwide and everywhere you go there is the spirit of sessions with friends, pushing tricks and lines and there is a community sense inside the scene. For me it is absolutely great to be a vertskater. Just as a sidenote it makes travelling easier and all over the world you meet people with the same orientation who welcome you as if you belong to them since ages. It is a privilege to belong to a culture where you can express yourself liberately, where it is about fun, good sense, a meaningful way of life, which is alive since decades and is lived by a small, manifold bunch of people

Fazit allgemein: Wie du in die Welt hineingehst, so wird sie dir begegnen. Egal wo ich war, mir gefällt es auf der ganzen Welt, es gibt überall ganz großartige Menschen und ich habe, trotz versuchens, keinen langweiligen Ort kennen gelernt. So habe ich neben zwei meiner Lieblingsstädte, Melbourne und San Francisco, Singapore als besonders zukunftsorientierte Stadt kennen gelernt, Austin und Tucson als Geheimtip, Hong-Kong und Shanghai als aufstrebende neue Mitte. Mein Weltbild ist runder und kompletter geworden.

Bottom line as a whole: Wherever you go out into the world you will meet it. No matter where I went I feel comfortable everywhere. there are great people all over and even if I tried hard, I did not find a boring place. So I discovered Singapore as a city oriented for the future. Got to know my favorite cities Melbourne and San Francisco, found the secrets Austin and Tucson. Hong Kong and Shanghai as the new rising middle. My view on the world has gotten rounder and more complete.

Dieses Photo war total falsch belichtet, aber ein bischen an der Ausleuchtung und den Farben rumgespielt und es kommt ein schönes Photo dabei raus. Hat nicht viel mit der realen Farbgebung zu tun, aber mir gefällts. Hätte ich eine Digitalkamera gehabt hätt ichs bestimmt schon gelöscht.

This photo was exposed completely wrong. A little manipulation with the light and color and it becomes a good picture. There is not much reality concerning the colors, but I like it. I would have probably deleted it if I had a digital camera.

Die Ostküste der USA ist für den Indian Summer berühmt. Während dort bereits Ende Oktober überraschend der Winter hereingebrochen ist erleben wir ein solches Wetterphänomen hier die letzten Wochen. Es regnet nicht, ist mild, und die Bäume scheinen zu brennen. Sven Busam, one foot lien air.

Karlsruhe Longboard Open Report

Das erste Karlsruher Longboard Open war ein voller Erfolg. Wunderbares Herbstwetter brachte schätzungsweise 250 Longboarder und Zuschauer auf das Real Parkhaus im Karlsruhe.
The first Karlsruhe Longboard Open was a large success. Great autumn weather brought around 250 longboarders and spectators to the Real parking garage in Karlsruhe.

Es gab zu Essen und Trinken.......

There was food and drinks....

..........Musik und Dekoration.........

..........Stände mit Ausrüstung..........

.........booths with equipment.........

..............und interessierte Leute aller Altersstufen.

...........and interested people of all ages.

Die Downhillsessions und Rennen waren sehr spaßig.

Es gab auch eine Girls Kategorie.

There was a girls division too.

Es gab verschiedene Rennmodi. Zum Beispiel bei den Youngsters gab es einen LeMans-Massen-Start.
There were different kinds of races. The youngsters were done in a LeMans style start.

Die "Pros" fuhren ein Einzelzeitfahren-Qualifikationsrennen gefolgt von einem Head to Head Finale.

The "pros" did a single lane elemination followed by a head to head finale.

Es gab auch ein paar Unfälle aber ohne ernste Verletzungen

There were a few crashes without seriuos injuries

Am Ende gab es viele glückliche Gesichter vor dem dunkler werdenden Abendhimmel.

Vielen Dank an die Organisatoren. Das war wirklich ein hartes Stück Arbeit und wir sind gespannt auf das nächste Jahr.

In the end there were lots of happy faces in front of the darkening sky.

edit 27.10.2011: ich erhielt einen anonymen Kommentar, dass es auch einen

S-K-A-T-E Contest gab. Ich hab das vergessen/verdrängt. Irgendwie hab ich den Sinn dieses noch nie ganz kapiert. Es war aber ein lustiger und interessanter Contest, schön war, dass die Buchstaben von 4 netten Mädels hochgehalten wurden deren Talent auf die Prüfung gestellt wurde als sie 5 Buchstaben gleichzeitig hochhalten mussten. Schöne Idee. Mit Longboards ist das ein bischen schwierig finde ich. Die Boards sind so unterschiedlich und mit manchen sind manche Tricks einfach schwierig bis unmöglich.

Das Ding stand auf der Ile de Re, Frankreich, am Strand, war wohl Teil eines alten Bunkers. War nicht leicht zu fahren das, abschüssig und mit feinem Sand bedeckt.

Wieviel Glück kann man eigentlich haben? Gestern fand der der 13te Tim Brauch Memorial Contest im Lake Cunningham Skatepark, San Jose, statt – und ich war zufällig über das Wochenende in der Nähe. Nachdem ich schon am Freitag mit meinem guten Freund Mickey im Potrero del Sol Skatepark eine ausgedehnte Morgensession hatte, kam mir ein Tag Zuschauen gerade recht – Knochen ausruhen und Inspiration tanken.

Also bin ich am Samstag Morgen ganz entspannt nach San Jose aufgebrochen. Das Wetter war genial: Sonnig aber nicht zu heiss. Und als ich um 11:00 ankam war der Park schon brechend voll und auf dem VANS Stand haben Steve Caballero und Christian Hoisoi eine Autogrammstunde abgehalten.

How lucky can you be? The 13^th Tim Brauch Memorial Contest was on yesterday at Lake Cunningham Skatepark, San Jose and I happened to be in the area. After having had an extended morning session the day before at Potrero del Sol with my good friend Mickey I was happy to spend the day watching, relaxing and getting some inspiration.

So I made my way to San Jose on Saturday morning. Weather was perfect: sunny and not too hot. The park was already packed when I got there at 11 AM and Steve Caballero and Christian Hosoi gave autographs in the Vans booth.

Ort der Handlung ist der „Skull Bowl“. Nicht wirklich ein Bowl, sondern eigentlich ein ziemlich großer Pool. Am ehesten kann man ihn mit dem Keyhole in München vergleichen. Nur vielleicht einen halben Meter tiefer und mit einem fetten Steincoping ringsum. Also wirklich schön aber auch ziemlich ehrfurchteinflößend wenn man die Größe nicht gewohnt ist.

Nun ist hier also ein Querschnitt von super guten Locals, angereisten Pros und vor allem den Masters – also Skatern meiner Generation (45 aufwärts) – um mal zu zeigen was in so einem Gerät möglich ist. Und da geht einiges. Vergebt mir, dass ich nicht jedes Detail von jedem Trick kenne, aber hier mal eine kurze Zusammenfassung was ich so über den Tag gesehen habe:

Amateure bis 13 Jahre inklusive Mädchen zeigen hier fette Grinds – besonders beliebt: Frontside Smith - und gut 1 Meter hohe Airs im Deep End von 9-jährigen Jungs. Es ist mir vollkommen schleierhaft, wie man mit so wenig Gewicht so viel Speed bekommen kann.

Die aktuelle Liga der Pros zeigen alle möglichen Lip Tricks, kopfhohe Airs inklusive 540s und vor allem eine absolute Angstfreiheit bei den Jam Sessions. So was habe ich überhaupt noch nicht gesehen. Im Jam wird gesnaked was das Zeug hält. Machen wir ja auch manchmal - nur dass dann der „Verlierer“ die Rampe schnell wieder verläßt und der Gewinner halt weiter fährt. Nicht so hier: Hier fahren einfach alle weiter. Es gab Sessions in denen waren 4 Leute gleichzeitig im Pool. Aber natürlich sind die nicht einfach hintereinander her gefahren, sondern kreuz und quer im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes – und dann natürlich trotzdem alle die fetten Tricks. Das war echt der Hammer und zeigt wie locker die Jungs das machen. Von wegen Konzentration und keine Störung für den großen Trick. Da macht einer einen Roll-In im Deep End hat 2 Fast-Zusammenstöße mit anderen Skatern und zieht dann einen 540 raus. Super Eindrucksvoll – aber auch Super Scary! Und: Die Hälfte der Jungs ohne Pads . . . Nicht meine Welt. Guckt euch einfach dieses Video an:

The arena was the „Skull Bowl“. Not really a bowl but a massive Pool. It resembles the Keyhole at Munich but about 2 feet deeper and some fat concrete coping all around. Beautiful but intimidating if you are not used to the size.

There was a heap of incredible skilled locals, visiting pros and Masters of my generation (45 up) showing what is possible in a pool like that. Sorry for not being able to tell you every single detail of all the tricks I have seen that day. Here is a short summary:

Ams and Girls up to 13 showed grinds, frontside smiths and 3 foot airs by 9-year-olds. I just don´t know how to get so much speed without any weight.

The pros showed all kinds of tricks, head high airs, 540s and absolutely no fear in the jam sessions. I have never seen anything like that. They snake no holds barred. We also do that sometimes but usually one of the snakers leaves the ramp really soon. Here, they just ride on. There were up to 4 skaters in the pool at a time. They did not ride behind each other but across in all directions doing all the hard tricks. Half of them was without pads…not my world.

Tja und dann natürlich die Masters – Für mich absolut das Highlight des Tages. Angereist (und von mir erkannt) waren: Steve Alba, Pat Ngoho, Steve Caballero (er ist Local und kommt meisstens Mittwoch abends), Christian Hosoi und Jeff Hedges. Siehe Photo von der Siegerehrung unten - von links nach rechts. Diese Jungs sind alles gesetzte Herren nahe der 50, aber was die in diesem Pool noch abziehen ist spektakulär. Zum einen kommen natürlich auch hier noch einige ziemlich gute Tricks und Airs, aber was das wirklich Eindrucksvolle ist, sind der Style, die Kraft und die Geschwindigkeit. Die Boardslides von Pat und Cab sind einfach spektakulär wenn sie 1 Meter entfernt an einem vorbei rauschen. Am besten kommt das in diesem Video vom ersten Durchgang der Masters Finals raus. Ich hatte dafür einen Platz direkt am Coping vom Deep End ergattert. Also angucken und genießen:
Then it was the masters – my highlight of the day. I recognized Steve Alba, Pat Ngoho, Steve Caballero ( a local at the park) Christian Hosoi and Jeff Hedges. (see awards giving photo, l to r) These dudes in their late 40s just go off in this pool. Really good tricks and airs but most impressive is their style, power and speed. Pat and Steves boardslides are spectacular when they roar past you 3 feet away. I managed to get a spot at the coping of the deep end.

Nach der Siegerehrung um 5 war dann alles schnell vorbei aber die Stimmung war so gut, dass ich mir auch noch meine Pads angezogen habe und noch eine coole 3 Stunden Session bis zum Sonnenuntergang gefahren bin - Kalifornien, Du hast es einfach gut!

Ich skate nun seit 35 Jahren, und man kann schon sagen, dass wir weit gekommen sind. Als ich anfing war Skateboarding als Kinderkram, Spielzeug angesehen worden, ein Trend der bald vorbei geht und dazu noch SAUGEFÄHRLICH IST UND VERBOTEN GEHÖRT!!!!
So sprachen Eltern, Politiker und die Presse nicht nur einmal. Es wurden Verletzungstatistiken aufgeführt und Horrorstorries von tödlichen Unfällen
veröffentlicht. Viele engangierte Skater haben es geschafft Skateboarding annähernd zu einer anerkannten Sportart zu machen und viele Vorurteile zu beseitigen.
Die Topskater sind heute anerkannte Persönlichkeiten weltweit. Ich sage nun hier in meinem Blog etwas was vielleicht einigen nicht gefällt:
Mir stinkt es, dass immer mehr Leute ohne Helm in tiefen Bowls und Halfpipes skaten! Damit riskiert ihr das Ansehen unserer Lieblingsbeschäftigung! Ihr riskiert auch irgendwann sabbernd im Rollstuhl vor dem Skatepark zu stehen und nur zuschauen zu können (sorry an alle Rollstuhlfahrer) und außerdem euer Leben!
Wenn jemand ohne Knie- und Elbogenschoner skated ist mit das reichlich egal, mir tut das nicht weh, aber ohne Helm ist reine Dummheit.
Der Trend bei Contests, Tricks ohne Pads höher zu bewerten als mit ist eine sehr bedenkliche Entwicklung.
Judges, hört damit auf! Magazines, hört damit auf das zu fördern!

I often write about positive things in this blog. Things that are fun, great moments in Skateboarding. I skate since 35 years and I dare to say we have come a long way. When I started Skateboarding was called a kids thing, DANGEROUS TOYS THAT HAVE TO BE BANNED!!!!!
The press, politcans and parents said this not just once!
Injury statistics and horror stories of deadly accidents had been issued. Many dedicated skaters made our sport almost accepted today and have succeeded in killing a lot of prejudice. A lot of top skaters are celebrities today.
Now I´ll say something that some may not like:
I hate people skating without helmets in deep bowls and ramps and parks.
You risk the reputation of our sport! You also risk sitting in a wheelchair drooling and watching others skate the park.
(sorry to all people who need a wheelchair) and you risk your lifes!
I don´t care if anyone skates without pads, but not using a helmet is dumb!
It is a dangerous trend that judges give more points for tricks executed without pads.
Judges, please stop that. Magazines, please stop promoting this!

Ich liebe es gutes Skateboarding in Pools und Vertramps zu sehen. Leider führt das ohne die richtige Protection oft zu Kopfverletzungen. I love watching good skating in pools and vertramps. Rather sad this sometimes leads to serious injuries without proper protection

Die Jungs in Augsburg waren weiterhin nicht untätig und haben eine Vertramp in die Halle gestellt.

So wie es aussieht handelt es sich um eine Viola, dieselbe wie die Campus Ramp nur ohne Extentions.

The dudes at Augsburg have not been sitting anround. They added a vert ramp to their indoor park. It looks like it is a Viola Ramp just like the Campus Ramp minus the extentions.

Korsika, das Land der Wildschweine und Kurvenstraßen.

Corsica. land of the boars and curvy roads

In Bastia, der Hauptstadt der Insel gibt es einen Bowl direkt am Strand.

Jeder Strand der Welt der was auf sich hält sollte so was haben!

Bastias Bowl ist gut gebaut obwohl sich im Wasserfall von shallow (1,50) zu deep end (2,10) ein komischer Hubbel befindet den man aber nicht merkt.

Obwohl Korsika politisch zu Frankreich gehört war das Coping nicht verwachst, ist wohl doch zu weit weg....

Bastia, the capitol of the island has a bowl on the beach. Every single beach should have one! The bowl is well built despite a strange wobble in the waterfall connecting shallow (1,50 meters) and deep (2,10 meters). You don´t feel it though.

Despite Corsica belonging to France politically, the coping is not waxed, maybe it is too far away.

Die locals waren locker drauf und einige haben während der session Gittare gespielt. Live music session, cool.

Actionshots habe ich wenig,es war einfach zu heiss!

35 C und heftigste Sonne, das Bad im Mittelmeer danach habe ich sehr genossen!

I don´t have good action shots it was just too hot. 35 C in brutal sunshine. I really appreciated the swim after the session.

Noch ein Tip: Korsika hat unglaublich viele Gebirgstraßen, die sich in der Nebensaison bei weniger Verkehr teilweise unglaublich gut zum Longboarden und Downhill skaten eignen. Check it out!

Here is a tip: Corsica has many mountain roads that are very well suited to downhill and longboarding in the off season when there is less traffic. Check it out!

München bekommt SCHON WIEDER einen neuen Skatepark.

Diesmal fehlen Betoncoping und Pools, der Park sieht mehr wie ein 70´s Style Skatepark aus. Mit runden Lips und vielen Speedbumps sieht das nach viel Flow aus.
Eine Cradle und ein Wallride mit viel Vert ist auch vorhanden sowie ein paar Stellen mit Stahlcoping.

Munich gets ANOTHER Skatepark.

This time there are no Pools and Poolcoping, the park looks like a 70´s style skatepark with lots of round lips and speedbumps.

There is a cradle and a wallride too as well as some places with steel coping.

Hier die ersten Photos des noch nicht ganz fertigen Parks. Von den Locals hört man, dass einige Stellen schwer zu befahren sind, da der Park abschüssig gebaut wurde und vielen Walls ein Gegenüber fehlt und sie dadurch schwer anzufahren sind. Die Cradle zum Beispiel scheint schwer mit genug Speed zu erreichen zu sein da sie am höchsten Punkt des Skateparks steht. Laut den locals kommt man nicht höher als bis zur Hälfte...

Warten wirs ab, beim nächsten München Trip ist ein Besuch aber auf jeden Fall Pflicht.

Here are the first pics of the park. There are rumors that some hits are hard to get to with speed, due to the park being on a slate and there are no opposing walls at some places. The locals say that they cannot get higher than the first half of the cradle.

We will see, the park is a mandatory stop on the next Munich trip, thats for sure.

Wieviel die Stadt München für Skateparks in den letzten 4 Jahren ausgegeben hat ist unglaublich.
Hoffen wir, dass weitere Städte verstehen. Hoffen wir, dass diese sich dann auch wie München für die richtige Methode entscheiden.
It is hard to believe how much Munich has spent for good skateparks in the last 4 years. Let´s hope others will follow and choose the right method to build parks.

Sommerurlaub für 2 Wochen. Ich hoffe auf genauso gutes Wetter wie damals im Summercamp 1984 in Schweden als dieses Photo von Lance Mountain und Thomas "Kellogs" Keller entstanden ist.

Die die dabei waren wissen warum Lance und Thomas am Strand so gute Laune hatten!

Erinnert ihr euch an den Bowl for free?

Das Razed Team in Augsburg hatte sich als erstes dafür interessiert, aber dann wollte der Eigentümer des Bowls doch Geld dafür. Das Razed Team hat nun aber den Bowl aus der ehemaligen BMX-Halle in Emmering (Tretlager e.V.) bekommen und ist dabei diesen in der Halle in Augsburg aufzubauen. Tolle Aktion, Daumen hoch!

The Razed-Team of Augsburg was among the first to show interest, but the owner decided to ask for money later. The Razed Team received another bowl by now and currently is working on its resurrection. Good action, thumbs up!

"The Good, The Rad and The Gnarly" a book review

Bücher über Skateboarding gibt es mittlerweile sehr viele. Ich glaube jedoch keines beschreibt die Entstehung und Entwicklung ähnlich umfassend wie "The Good, The Rad and The Gnarly".

Der Autor geht zurück zu den 20er Jahren, als es nachgewiesenermaßen Tretroller in allen Formen gab und die ersten Rollschuhe entwickelt wurden, aus denen dann wohl die ersten Skateboards entstanden sind.

Wer wo wann dann als erstes den Handgriff abgemacht hat und so der erste Skateboarder war wird auch in diesem Buch nicht preisgegeben. Das ist jedoch wohl auch unmöglich. Macht aber auch nichts. Hier kommen so viele bekannte und unbekannte Persönlichkeiten zu Wort

und bekommen mit Anekdoten und Infos und Photos und Interviews die Möglichkeit, Ihre Version und Ihren Einfluß auf die Geschichte preiszugeben, dass es wirklich interssant zu lesen ist.

There are many books about skateboarding nowadays. But I don´t think there is one that covers the genesis and development as complete as “The Good, The Rad and The Gnarly”.

The author goes back to the 1920s when there were Scooters in many forms and the first rollerskates were developed the first skateboards were made out of.

Who ripped off the handlebar when first and where and so became the first skateboarder is not revealed in this book. It is not likely this will ever be possible to tell. It does not matter though. So many people speak out in this book. Many known and unknown peronalities are given the opportunity to tell their version of the story via anecdotes, infos, photos and interviews.

It is really interesting to read

Wirklich ein tolles Buch. Was mir ein bischen fehlt ist die Geschichte in Europa, aber ich glaube dann wäre das Buch doppelt so dick. Es ist wirklich nicht leicht die Geschichte des Skateboarding umfassend zu beschreiben.

Really a great book. For me, the only thing missing is the Europe part of the story, but I assume the book would be twice as thick, would that be covered as well.

It is no easy task to describe skateboardings history as a whole.

Manchen von euch ist Jack Smith´s Skateboarder´s Journal vielleicht schon bekannt.
Jack plant nun, das bisher auf reiner Web-Präsenz basierende Magazin auch in Druckform herauszubringen. Das Besondere daran ist, dass dieses Magazin vierteljährlich ALLE Formen des Skateboardings covern wird. Eine große Aufgabe, wenn man bedenkt dass die großen Magazine alles außer Streetskating weiterhin konsequent ignorieren.
Wer will kann Jack bei seinem Vohaben über Kickstarter.com unterstützen.
Maybe some of you already know Jack Smith´s Skateboarder´s Journal. Jack is planning to issue the magazine in printed form quarterly which was based on just the web until now. It will be special because it will cover ALL forms of Skateboarding. It is a big task considering the major magazines consequently ignore anything else but streetskating.

Jack ist kein Unbekannter in der Skateboardwelt. Er skated seit den frühen 70ern, ist das legendäre Signal Hill Speed Race mitgefahren, ist mehrmals mit dem Skateboard quer duch die USA geskated um für gute Zwecke zu sammeln und hat viele Slalomrennen organisiert, unter anderem mehrere Weltmeisterschaften.

Das Kino über dem Skateboardmuseum Stuttgart zeigte am 17.07..11 die Weltpremiere des Dokumentarfilmes "Asphaltsurfer"

Vor der Premiere war es Pflicht, dem im Museum im Keller einen Besuch abzustatten. Diese Figur begrüßt am Eingang.

Die Premiere war gut besucht

The premiere was well attended.

83 Minuten deutsche Skateboardgeschichte wird darin durchlebt. Was Marco Tremiliti, Stefan Schorer und Stefan Senn da zeigen hat bis heute niemand in dieser Fülle und mit dieser Intensität gezeigt. In Interviews, Photos und historischen Filmschnipseln wird die Entwicklung der deutschen Skateboardgeschichte nachgezeichnet. Wenn man weiß wie wenig Informationen und Bildmaterialien gerade aus den ganz verangenen Zeiten vorlagen wird einem klar was diese Crew da in jahrelanger Arbeit vollbracht hat.

Der Film macht wirklich Spaß und birgt eine Fülle von Informationen und Bildern, die vielen bestimmt neu sind. Ich hoffe, dass der Film auf seiner Tour um die Welt die Anerkennung findet die er verdient. Sicher hat mancher die Dinge vielleicht anders gesehen oder aus einem anderen Blickwinkel erlebt, aber der Streifen ist wirklich sehenswert. Vielen Dank Jungs!

Gewidmet Marco Tremiliti RIP

The history of Skateboarding in Germany is lived through there in 83 minutes. Noone has ever shown something like this before with this intensity and volume.

The docu by Marco Tremiliti, Stefan Schorer and Stefan Senn uses interviews, photos and footage parts to review the history. When you consider how little material they had available you can imagine what a tremendous effort it took to create the docu in many years. It is fun and gives a lot of info which is probably new to many. I hope it will receive the recognition it deserves on its tour around the world. I am sure some will have experienced it differently or may have had another angle of view but the flick is well worth being watched. Thank you very much guys.

Ich habe Dan Hughes 2002 in Morro Bay bei den World Slalom Championships getroffen. Wir unterhielten uns etwas und er erzählte mir Samstag Nachmittags dass er noch am Abend zu der Eröffnung des neuen Pipeline Skateparks nach LA zurückfahren wird, aber am nächsten Morgen wieder in Morro sein würde, Das sind immerhin 350 KM (eine Strecke). Das beeindruckte mich schon damals. Nun hat Dan seit einiger Zeit eine Website auf der er immer wieder Photos von unzähligen Skateparks zeigt, die er besucht hat. Dan stammt aus dem Nordwesten der USA, lebt aber mittlerweile in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I met Dan Hughes 2002 during the World Slalom Championships in Morro Bay. We talked and he told me that he visited the opening of the new Pipeline Skatepark in LA. Dan now has a website where he shows great photos of various skateparks he visits all over the place. Dan is from the nothwestern US but now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I am 47 years old.

profession?

I am a custodian at an Elementary School, I’ve been a custodian for over 25 years.

When did you start:

skateboarding?

I started skateboarding when my uncle gave me a skateboard when I was about 11 years old (1974). It was a wood board with wood roller rink wheels which wore down very quickly on the concrete. I skated pretty much every day possible until shortly after I got married in 1983, when I took my vert ramp down (’84). I skated off and on, but mostly was busy with school, and work and kids… and didn’t really start skating again until 2001, when they opened a skatepark in my hometown of Renton, Washington.

I was coaching my son’s little league game, and before the game got started, I had to check out the new skatepark that was nearby the ball field. And I couldn’t believe my eyes. I said to myself, "I used to pay money to do this…" So, I told my son that “Saturday I’m going to get up at 6 AM and skate at the skatepark”.

So, at 6 AM we all went down to the skatepark, and after just a couple of minutes I realized that I had just found my "treadmill" (which I was ready to buy one just a week earlier).We skated for 3 hours and I was so tired and out of shape, but I had so much fun I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I also figured out the key to staying healthy, is to find some physical activity you love to do, and do it! I haven’t stopped or looked back since. I used to work on cars and many other things as hobbies and I just don’t have the time anymore, I’d rather be skating.

Travelling to skateparks?

I started traveling to skateparks when Newberg, Oregon was just finished. It was one of Dreamland's first skateparks, and it was a dream. It was Newberg that gave me the thirst for more. That park was so smooth, and I honestly didn’t know that concrete could be so smooth. The more I learned about other parks, the more I wanted to go and skate them. That was in 2001 and now I want to skate them all, but as I say there are so many parks, but so little time...

your homepage?

I started my web page shortly after I started going to different skateparks. I would get email requests for pictures of a skatepark I went to, and after a while I decided it would be easier to just put them all on the web and direct people to that, instead of sending out individual emails. The website evolved into taking pictures of the every park I visited, and including an address or map. My goal was, and still is, to have a simple page that doesn’t take forever to load, but has all the information one would want or need about a particular skatepark and a way to share photos with friends.

Why the full face helmet?

In 2003 I hit my face doing a slide at the old Ballard Bowl. I bent my two front teeth back so that they were almost touching the roof of my mouth. I remember thinking as I got up from that slam, that my teeth weren't in the right place. So, after having the ER Doc pull on my teeth to bend them back into place, and the Dentist tell me that I might lose them (which I didn't), I wondered if my full face helmet, that I used for slalom, would protect my teeth and could I skate bowls with it? And sure enough, it worked fine, and has worked very well at protecting my teeth ever since (yes, I have tested it).

What is your motivation:

to keep skating?

The core of my being says to skate, I can't "not" skate. When I watched the movie "Chariots of Fire" the main character (Eric Liddell), a missionary to China, was being criticized by his sister for running in so many races. He told her that God made him fast for a purpose, and when he runs he feels God's pleasure. I can relate to Eric’s statement. It is reflective of how I feel when I skate, I feel God’s pleasure, I feel energy that seems to come from the concrete up through my feet. I may not be really "fast" so to speak, but I feel it in my soul, when I skate. I couldn't "not" skate.

to keep up the site?

The site has snowballed into a resource page. One of my main motivations is selfish. I do it because I forget which parks I've been to, where they were, and what they looked like. I know that sounds lame, but it's true. I reference my site often, simply because I can't recall when/where/ or what it looked like. But, not just that, as a guy who loves to travel and skate, I find that sometimes some of the most basic information about skateparks is hard to find, especially if the park is new. So I appreciate having good information out there about skateparks.

It's also a way to share my photos as I said before. I started it before there was a “myspace”, or a “facebook”, so it sort of is my way to share where I've been and what I've been up to. Sometimes I'll get emails from friends from long ago, or even complete strangers (friends I've not met yet), and I really do enjoy that. Sometimes they come through my town and I have the privilege of skating with them, which to me is a real highlight, because for a skater, to skate with someone else is a connection unlike anything else.

to travel to new parks?

You know, it's very similar to a mountain climber's passion to climb a new mountain. Every park is different, and experiencing the difference is one of the things that drives me. Some parks are so smooth, that it’s amazing to experience the smoothness. Some parks have unique shapes and sizes, and some are in locations that just are amazing. This may sound funny, but skateboarding is like reading a book, and every park tells a different story. I read each park with my wheels, and how the concrete is formed tells me where to go, what the best lines are. Some parks are good and some aren't. But ultimately I don't know until I roll around and read it with my wheels. Exploring the world of skateparks and skateboarding with my wheels is what motivates me to travel and skate new terrain. When I see a new skatepark on the web, or even an old one that I haven't been to, it is like seeing a trailer for a movie, and wanting to see that movie really bad. I'll start thinking and planning a trip to get there.

Who do you skate with and what is your favorite park?

In the last two years, my life has changed quite a bit after my divorce, I moved from the Seattle area to Salt Lake City, and got remarried. So, I used to skate with a bunch of guys in the Seattle area, which I do miss and try to get back as much as possible. But, I haven’t really found a crew here in Salt Lake to skate with.

However, my wife skates, and that’s a real bonus for me, and to be honest a dream come true. So usually I skate with her, and since we both love to travel it's been really good.

As for my favorite skatepark, that’s a hard question. For me, I love big, fast, deep bowls, but there are so many good parks now. However, Hailey, Idaho and Orcas Island, Washington are still my favorite parks. I try to get to each of them at least once a year.

What is interesting to me also is seeing parks through my wife's eyes. She sees them differently than I do, and for her the fun parks are ones like we used to ride in the '70's, with snake runs and things, so I'm always on the look out for a good park for her.

Viele alte Aufnahmen die aus den Archiven von Skatern ausgekramt wurden (u.a. von Yoyo und mir) und Interviews mit bekannten Gesichtern aus der deutschen Skatebardgeschichte wie Yoyo Schulz, Claus Grabke und Matthias Bauer und vieler anderer machen den Film zu einem "must see"

Das Wetter bei uns im Juli ist oft von starken Gewittern und Regenschauern bestimmt. Schon aufgrund der Wettervorhersage am Freitag dachte ich nicht, in den Genuss einer Session zu kommen. Sonntag morgen um 10 flatterte Steffens SMS rein: " Regen ab 13 Uhr, schafft euren Hintern spätestens um 11 zur Rampe"
Als ich zuhause (15 Min) wegfuhr tröpfelte es. An der Rampe angekommen knallte die Sonne brutalst für 2 Stunden vom Himmel, wieder zuhause ab 13.45 Uhr schüttete es.
Over here the weather in July is often accompanied by thunder storms. Due to the forecast on Friday I never thought to be able to skate on the weekend when suddenly I received a message from Steffen Sunday morning "get your butts to the ramp at 11 AM, it will rain by 1 PM". It was dripping rain when I left at home (15 min to the ramp). Arriving at the ramp the sun was up and beating down for two hours. Back at home it started to pour by 1.45 PM.

Ich sage euch jetzt nicht wie alt er geworden ist, denn das spielt keine Rolle. Zumindest nicht beim Skateboarding. Ich sah ihn vor kurzem einen Slam in seinem ersten Run, zweite Wall einstecken als er in einer Pfütze ausrutschte der jeden anderen jüngeren auf die Zuschauerplätze verwiesen hätte, aber er schüttelte sich ein paar Mal und skatete wie immer weiter.

I don´t tell you how old he became, it does not matter in skateboarding anyway. A few weeks ago I saw him take a slam first run second wall when he slipped on a puddle that would have sent anyone else to the bleachers. He shook it off and skated on like always.

Bowl Contests Germany

Immer mehr Bowls und Pools werden in Deutschland gebaut. Als natürliche Folge gibt es immer mehr Pool/Bowlcontests, eine sehr erfreuliche Entwicklung. Nach Stuttgart steht nun der Contest im neuen Bowl in Münster an.

More and more Bowls and Pools are being built in Germany. Naturally, there are more and more Pool/Bowlcontests which is great. After Stuttgart there will be the Contest in Münster

Am 16.07.2011 trifft sich eine große Anzahl Poolskater in Münster zum Bergfest.

Sogar Duane Peters hat sich mit seiner Band US Bombs angekündigt. Chuck Treece wird mit den McRad da sein. Big Ben Schröder, Jürgen Horrwarth sind einige der bekannteren Poolshredder die sich bereits angemeldet haben.

A large numer of poolskaters will meet in Münster July 16th for the Bergfest.

Even Duane Peters with the US Bombs and Chuck Treece with McRad will be there. Big Ben Schroeder and Jrgen Horrwarth are some of the famous names who have already registered.

Mein Lieblingssender ist definitiv Arte. Ich habe schon viele wirklich sehenswerte Dokumentationen dort gesehen. Heute um 21.50 Uhr bringt Arte eine Dokumentation über Skateboarding

Ich bin gespannt ob diese dieselbe Qualität zeigt wie alle anderen. Die Doku stammt aus Frankreich und beinhaltet auch die Quiksilver Tony Hawk Show im Grand Palais in Paris.

My favourite TV program is Arte. I have seen several really good documantaries there. Today at 9.50 PM they show a documantary about Skateboarding. Lets see if is will be of the same quality. It was made in France and also contains footage from Tony Hawks Quiksilver Show at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Das Wetter war etwas sketchy also machten wir die erste Session in Ulm. Etwas frisch morgens um 8.30 Uhr begrüßte uns der tiefe Bowl.

Georg hatte einen Wahnsinnstag, ich sah ihn die letzten 10 Jahre nicht so gut skaten.

Like a good bottle of whisky some get better with age. Georg had an amazing day skating better than I have seen him the last 10 years.

Auf dem Weg nach München machten wir eine gemütliche Pinkelpause und hörten plötzlich aus einem Keller unerwartet laute Skategeräusche. Nach eingehender Suche fanden wir dieses Schmuckstück. Die Photos daraus sind etwas verschwommen und unscharf, aber in einem kleinen Keller mit 10 schwitzenden Skatern und 85% Luchtfeuchtigkeit ist das nicht ganz einfach.
On the way to Munich we had a piss break when, suddenly, we heard loud skate sounds emerging from a basement. Upon further investigation we found this beauty. The photos we took are a bit blurry and out of focus, but in a basement with 10 sweating skaters and 85 % humidity this is not an easy task.

NL # 6 hatte wieder Wetterglück und volles Haus.

NL # 6 was lucky again weather wise and the house was packed

Das Niveau war wieder hoch und die Skateboarder boten einen guten Contest obwohl die Rampe wohl nicht der harten Beanspruchung gewachsen war. Die Skater mussten Löcher flicken.

Einer der wenigen Vertcontests für jedermann in Europa, den Organisatoren sei gedankt, wir freuen uns auf das nächste Mal. The level was high again and the skaters had a good contest, despite the fact that the ramp did not hold up the abuse of a contest. The skaters had to fix holes themselves.

One of the very few vert contests for everyone in Europe, thanks to the organisers. We are looking forward to next year.
